  • Insurance reimbursement available in most cases. Private insurance can reimburse a certain percentage of physical therapy patient fees depending on individual plans. Please consult your plan. Pilates sessions taught by certified pilates teachers instead of a physical therapist are not reimbursable by insurance.

  • Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, who immigrated to the United States in 1923 from Germany. Joseph’s background in gymnastics, boxing and bodybuilding helped to provide the foundation for his exercises.

    Upon reaching New York, Joseph quickly became known as a body movement specialist, most specifically in working with dancers. His unique form of exercise incorporated alignment, breath, balance, concentration, efficiency of movement and control. Joseph Pilates espoused that the Pilates method improved health of the entire organism; mentally, physically and spiritually, through movement and concentration.

  • The Pilates method incorporates resistance in the form of springs that can increase or decrease difficulty depending on the setting. It can be done in weight bearing or non-weight bearing to alter the loads placed on the muskulo-skeletal system. Intrinsic muscles (postural stabilizers) are consistently working while additional loads are placed on the distal segment. Therefore, “the core” is always active while strengthening and/or lengthening the arms and legs. Postural alignment is paramount in each exercise, making it an extremely complementary method of exercise in the rehab setting.

  • In your first session, you will be taken though a detailed evaluation analyzing your movement patterns and compensatory strategies. Unique exercises will be implemented to support positive movement patterns. Specific home exercise instruction will also be given. Manual techniques can be used to further motor learning and improve mobility of stiff joints or hypertonic muscles.

    Comfortable clothes should be worn as well as removable shoes.
